It doesn't happen often anymore, if it ever did, and most people have to go out of their way to experience this amazing vehicle, which grows rarer with each passing day. It's not as if most of us would be able to afford it, but it's something just to be able to see it, touch it, and smell it up close.
The Ford GT40 is a high-performance racing car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1966 to 1969. Ford had specifically designed the vehicle to topple Ferrari who had dominated Le Mans from 1960 to 1965. The GT element of the name stands for Grand Touring, and the 40 designation represents the overall height of the car, an important Le Mans restriction.

The four primary GT40 models were the Mark I-IV. The Mark I was the original GT40. There were 12 prototypes of the Mark I, and these included a 4.2L V8 engine under the hood. However, on the production models, Ford used the Mustang's 4.7L engine.
There were an additional five Mark I prototype models, distinguished by their roadster bodywork, built by the Ford GT40 design team. The Ford X-1 is the most notable of these five prototypes. Entered by the McLaren team, and driven by Chris Amon, the Ford X-1 won the Fall-1965 North American Pro Series.
For the Mark II, the follow-up to that original GT40, Ford switched from the Mustang engine to the 7.0L engine that they used in the Ford Galaxie. For two specific Mark II models, which they raced at Daytona in 1967, Ford fitted them with Mercury 7.0L engines. These engines were essentially the same, but the distinction is noteworthy to collectors.
Ford designed the GT40 Mark III for road use, but only manufactured seven models. Ford detuned the 4.7L engine from the Mark I to 335 horsepower, and they softened the suspension system. At the time, consumers interested in a GT40 for road use were already buying modified Mark Is that Wyer Ltd. manufactured. The Mark IIIs looked entirely different, and they were not very popular until years later when their rarity was more important than their aesthetics.
Before the GT40 Mark IV, there was the J-car. There were many hands in the pot at this point, and Ford wanted to bring the GT40 in-house by lessening their involvement with the European automotive firms. In partnership with the Brunswick Aircraft Corporation, Ford built the J-car prototype with the innovative use of honeycomb aluminum panels. The designers reused the 7.0L engines from the earlier design. The name J-car was in reference to the Appendix J regulations that add been added to the rules at the time by FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile).
The Mark IV GT40 built on the J-car chassis, raced in only two events, but won both of them. These races were the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring. Unlike the earlier GT40s, the Mark IV was entirely American, having been built by Shelby.
In 1995, Ford unveiled the GT90 concept car at the Detroit Auto Show. It was a then modern take on the classic Ford GT40, but nothing really came of it. Nine years later, Ford began manufacturing the Ford GT, which was a modern homage to the Ford GT40, and they sold it from 2004 to 2006.

It's common to find Firebirds with the trunk completely rotted out. The gas tank, the lower quarter panels, and rear fender splats were also quite prone to holding mud and salt.
Is rust a deal breaker? How much bodywork are you willing to take on? These are important considerations because any Trans Am for sale that doesn't have a five-digit price tag is going to involve some rust, and this type of bodywork is not a simple process, especially for the uninitiated.
Keep in mind that by the time you see rust, the body is in bad shape. Perform a thorough inspection. Don't assume that just because you don't see it, it isn't there. When we find a Trans Am with rust, it's common to see crude repairs performed with Bondo. This is your cue to walk away from the purchase unless you are very skilled with bodywork. This type of prepare may work in one sense, but it makes it dramatically more difficult to get the body up to car show caliber.
As mentioned earlier, the key to this process is patience. With enough of it, you will find that Trans Am for sale in the right condition at the right price. If you're working on a tight budget, then stick to the private sellers where you'll have more room to negotiate. You'll have more options through the auctions and dealers but a lot less flexibility.

When housing prices in many parts of the country were booming a couple of years ago, there wasn't much national attention given to short sales. But with the current subprime debacle and increasing mortgage delinquencies, many people are wondering if the short sale process is a way to avoid foreclosure.
Basically, the definition of the short sale process is when the lender of a property allows the property to be sold for less than the amount due on the mortgage loan.

The obvious benefit to the short sale process is that it allows the seller to avoid the credit report damage associated with a foreclosure. A foreclosure can stay on your credit report for up to 10 years and can take an emotional and financial toll on you and your family.
But the pitfalls of the short sale process should be considered as well. The I.R.S. may consider any debt forgiveness as taxable income, thus resulting in a tax liability. In addition, lenders can often pursue a borrower for the deficiency balance (the difference between the amount owed and the amount paid).
In some cases you may be able to avoid taxation if you can prove you are insolvent. But if insolvency is unsuccessful, and you are faced with a tax liability resulting from the deficiency amount, it may make more financial sense for you to let the lender foreclose.
The Short Sale Process
The short sale process can vary, but it will generally work as follows:
1) The lender is contacted to discuss the possibility of a short sale and to determine the lender's process for completing the sale.
2) The seller issues a letter authorizing the release of personal information about the loan and the property to the buyer or escrow agency.
3) The lender will review a settlement statement, which will indicate the proposed selling price, remaining loan balances and itemize all expenses, including real estate commissions and other fees and expenses associated with the closing.
4) The seller will complete a "hardship letter," which will detail and explain all financial difficulties. Lenders will usually want to validate the seller's financial situation by looking at bank statements, investment accounts, along with examining paystubs and other financial records.
5) The lender will then look to the broker to provide a price opinion by examining the condition of the house and the market value of comparable properties.
6) The lender will then want to scrutinize the purchase agreement to determine if all amounts are reasonable and the real estate commission is acceptable.
Because of the documentation required, the short sale process can be lengthy. But if done correctly, it can work well for all parties involved. The lender avoids the uncertainty of the foreclosure process, the seller avoids a foreclosure on his or her credit report (along with potential bankruptcy), and the buyer hopefully got a good deal on a property.
Considering the complexity of the short sale process, you must be educated. If you are considering a short sale, make sure that you discuss your situation with a competent lawyer and accountant. The more educated you are on the process, the easier the transaction will be, and the better the impression you will make on the lender.

The Chevelle burst onto the automotive scene in the 1964 model year as a sedan, a station wagon, a convertible, and, most notably, a coupe. The coupe body style was the basis for the Chevelle SS, an important vehicle during the muscle car era. The Chevelle lineup was an instant success that offered a little of something for everyone.
In 1966, Chevrolet completely redesigned the frame that they had used the two years prior. In those first two years, the performance of a Chevelle with the more powerful engines had exposed some weaknesses in that initial design. At first, Chevrolet discussed the possibility of scaling back the engine lineup in order to make do with the frame as it was. In retrospect, that would have likely been a fatal decision.

Fortunately, Chevrolet decided against that approach. Just two years in, Chevrolet also felt that the Chevelle's current body style was outdated. The new "Coke-bottle" form was coming into fashion, and Chevrolet didn't like the look of the Chevelle body in comparison. Therefore, they saw this as the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with the one proverbial stone.
In 1967, none of the changes were as dramatic as a new frame, but there were quite a few of them. Chevrolet further tweaked last year's new frame, which provided drivability improvements across the entire range of Chevelles, but was particularly noticeable with the SS models. A government mandate to add an energy-absorbing steering column afforded the Chevrolet division an opportunity to redesign the steering column. Improvements in this area were particularly noticeable in the muscled Chevelles at high speed. The 67s also got a reworked bumper, a blackout tail panel, aggressive tires, 14-inch wheels, and front disc brakes.
Also in 1967, Chevrolet designated the SS as its own car, and that continued with the 1968 model. With the 1968 Chevelle, Chevrolet changed the body style again. This time they emphasized the Coke-bottle form even more dramatically, and they added a semi-fastback roofline for the hardtop coupe models. In late 1967, a new federal mandate required automakers to install shoulder belts, and Chevrolet added these belts at the end of the 1968 Chevelle's run. This is why you'll encounter some '68s with and without the shoulder belts.
Chevrolet offered the 1969 Chevelle for sale in a handful of trims: Chevelle 300, Chevelle Nomad, Chevelle Concourse, and the Chevelle Malibu. In addition, with the 1969 Chevelle for sale, Chevrolet dropped the SS396 series, and the Super Sport was once again a Chevelle performance option.
